User:Big Comic Book DataBase Spammer

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is not an actual user page. It is merely a placeholder for records of the actions of several anonymous IPs which engage in spamming behavior, specifically, adding links to the Big Comic Book DataBase on comic book related pages (and even some non-comic book related pages, like warlord [1]). This username was registered by User:Lowellian to stop anyone else from having it.

Known IPs:

To quote User:Toytoy from Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Big Comic Book DataBase:

  • "Grand Comic Book Database [2] Alexa ranking: 99,259
  • "Comic Art & Graffix Gallery Virtual Museum & Encyclopedia [3] Alexa ranking: 692,115
  • "Big Comic Book DataBase [4] Alexa ranking: 1,377,759 (not very good)"

The above is only a small sampling of comic book sites on the World Wide Web that are more popular than the Big Comic Book DataBase; many others exist, such as the Marvel Directory and the Marvel Chronology Project, to name but two more examples. The Big Comic Book DataBase is not currently an authoritative (it is very much incomplete) or major source of comic book information on the web (that is, it is not to comic books what the IMDB is to films), and as such, the hundreds of links created on Wikipedia must be regarded as spam for the intent of advertising. These links should be removed. Lowellian (talk)[[]] 06:34, Nov 28, 2004 (UTC)

Update: I have now removed most of the user's spam. Before I began doing so, users User:Carlj7 [5] and User:RickK [6][7][8][9][10] had already removed some of this user's spam. Lowellian (talk)[[]] 04:50, Dec 4, 2004 (UTC)

Hi:

I am Dave Koch, editor of this site. I was playing tonight on the web, and saw this page, and these comments. I thought I should reply.

First, I apologize for the problems we seem to have caused- that was not our intention. One of our editors had added similar links for our other site (the Big Cartoon DataBase), and those were accepted, even encouraged at Wikipedia. In fact, someone even set up a template for adding links for that site. Our intention was to add additional links to relevant content at the Comics site, based on what was done for Cartoon. We are (obviously) not too well versed on the etiquette of Wikipedia.

Also, when this was done- a couple years ago- this site was very new, and we were looking at different ways to help drive traffic to the site. So that was also one of our motivations, I admit. But I assure you we did NOT intend this to be Spam. Based on what was done with BCDB, it was NOT spam. Sorry it was taken that way.

Since the post above in 2004, this site has grown tremendously. While I do not agree that Alexa is the most accurate or best way to guestimate traffic, it is the metric you have chosen. Please note we now have traffic equal to Grand Comic Book Database, based on Alexa.

Our comics database is being built by the same people who built The Big Cartoon DataBase. BCDB IS "to cartoons what the IMDB is to films", and thus we believed our new (Comics) site can and will be the same authoritative source for comic books. We do our home work, and we do good work. The comics site was judged fairly early in its life; I think a look now will show it is being filled out a lot closer to its potential. I am happy you did decide to keep the site. But there is a LOT more work to do, we know that. We continue to work on this to make it the best comics reference site on the web.

I would hope that in the future if you have a problem with our site, you might consider letting us know, we would be happy to respond and help in any way we can. Wikipedia is a wonderful site and resource, and we would much rather be considered partners than spammers here.
