[edit]Bed Town?
Pardon me if this is a wrong place, but I'm just wondering whether or not the expression "bed town" is legitimate English. Is it jargon in the suburban development industry?
[QUOTE] Fairmount is a town located in Grant County in east central Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,992. It is ninety kilometers (fifty-five miles) northeast of Indianapolis. Largely a _bed town_ to its three thousand citizens, Fairmount is best known as the boyhood home of actor James Dean, who is buried there. [UNQUOTE]
Is there anyone who is kind enough to enlighten me on the term "Bed Town"?
Thank you.
Y.F.
Bed Town?
[edit]I have heard the term "bedroom community" used to refer to a town where there are no--or only a few--large employers. Hence, the residents commute to another town to work and return to their home town to sleep. Fairmount, Indiana, is a such a town. Those residents who are not self-employed usually drive to nearby Marion, Muncie, Kokomo, or Anderson to their jobs. Perhaps "bed town" means the same as "bedroom community." T.C.
