Hello.

John Denver image

[edit]

Bbsrock, I noticed that you uploaded a new image for John Denver. However, you didn't inlcude a source or any copyright information on the image. If you just lifted the image off the Internet somewhere, we can't use it. Images must be covered by fair use (such as a still from a movie), released under the GFDL or be in the public domain. Most images of celebrities aren't covered under these conditions. Please update the page where the image resides (here) with the appropriate copyright information. Thanks. En-dashes

[edit]

I see that you've been quite busy changing many properly formatted en-dashes into hyphens. Might I ask why? It's a violation of policy, and I'll revert them for you if you don't mind.

James F. (talk) 01:09, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Looks like he's still doing it as of mid-August 2005! How many has it been, I wonder?

Welcome to Wikipedia!

[edit]

Hello Bbsrock, welcome to Wikipedia!

Here are some tips:

If you feel a change is needed, feel free to make it yourself! Wikipedia is a wiki, so anyone (yourself included) can edit any article by following the Edit this page link. Wikipedia convention is to be bold and not be afraid of making mistakes. If you're not sure how editing works, have a look at How to edit a page, or try out the Sandbox to test your editing skills.

If, for some reason, you are unable to fix a problem yourself, feel free to ask someone else to do it. Wikipedia has a vibrant community of contributors who have a wide range of skills and specialties, and many of them would be glad to help. As well as the wiki community pages there are IRC Channels, where you are more than welcome to ask for assistance.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page. Thanks, Alphax τεχ 23:34, Mar 10, 2005 (UTC)

Dates

[edit]

I'm afraid that I overrode your edit in an edit conflict -- but when I checked, I found that you'd only added a comma in the middle of a date. There isn't any point doing that, as the Wikipedia date engine shows the date with or without a comma depending on the User's preferences; I never see a comma, because in England we don't use one, but U.S. users always see commas (if they have their preferences set properly). --Phronima 21:49, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Bbsrock. I noticed your edit on Lincoln Chafee and just wanted to let you know that there's no need to rearrange dates in that way, even if it's an American subject. As long as the dates are wikilinked, they'll automatically be arranged according to the user's preferences. Hope this helps! —Cleared as filed. 23:29, 10 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've noticed that some of the images you have uploaded to Wikipedia have no source or copyright information. Under the Criteria for speedy deletion, if they are like this for more than seven days after being tagged as lacking source information then they can be deleted. Here are the ones I've found that could be deleted soon:

Dates

[edit]

I realize that you are well-intentioned on this, but (for example) 4 October is correct Commonwealth English markup; there is no particular reason to change Commonwealth English to U.S. English in an article on Latin America. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style#National varieties of English. -- Jmabel | Talk 02:25, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't reverse dates in this way. Set your own preferences to show the dates in the way you prefer. - Nunh-huh 21:43, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Dashes & Dates

[edit]

Hello,

I'm new here, and I'm still learning. Most of my contributions to Wikipedia thus far have been birth & death dates. I'm unsure of the correct dash to use to separate the two. I read somewhere in the editing instructions to use the em dash not the en dash. I noticed on your Page you seem to prefer the en dash. Which is correct? Coretta Scott King birthdate/birthname

[edit]

I noticed you changed my "(born Coretta Scott; {dates}." It seems to be common and logical to list birthname with birthdate: see, for example, Kathie Lee Gifford and Maya Angelou.

Image Tagging for Image:Bettyfriedan.JPG

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Bettyfriedan.JPG. The image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to indicate why we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use GFDL to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies under Wikipedia's fair use guidelines, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. If you want the image to be deleted, tag it as db-unksource.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.

Request for edit summary

[edit]

Hi. I am a bot, and I am writing to you with a request. I would like to ask you, if possible, to use edit summaries a bit more often when you contribute. The reason an edit summary is important is because it allows your fellow contributors to understand what you changed; you can think of it as the "Subject:" line in an email. For your information, your current edit summary usage is 6% for major edits and 0% for minor edits. (Based on the last 150 major and 150 minor edits in the article namespace.)

This is just a suggestion, and I hope that I did not appear impolite. You do not need to reply to this message, but if you would like to give me feedback, you can do so at the feedback page. Thank you, and happy edits, Mathbot 01:30, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hyphens/dashes in dates -- what's the difference? (can't see it)

[edit]

Hi there. On your user page you contrast and compare these two lines:

(October 23, 1923 - December 1, 2005)
(October 23, 1923 – December 1, 2005)

But they look identical to me. The upper one is supposedly one you hate and the lower one is the one you favor. Please clue me in on the difference. I noticed your (minor) edit of Kevin Payne which according to page history entailed exchanging the hyphen/dash separating the birth/death dates; could not see the difference in my browser, and followed you to your user page. Is this something that renders differently for you, and not for me? Oh, and could you please use edit summaries? -- Mareklug talk 05:06, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Beatles pictures

[edit]

Hey mate, we're trying to write an article there and not build a gallery :-) The thing is, the pictures were laid out in a neat order - John then Paul then George then Ringo, which you've upset rather :-) Do you think you could choose the one or two best pictures from your batch, and move them after the JPG & R individual pictures, and remove the rest? The pictures you remove can maybe go onto the talk page so other people can see what spare photos we have available. I appreciate you're adding some colour, but the pictures of the 4 guys in order is really too great a concept to meddle with don't you think? :) --kingboyk 00:12, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Bfriedan.JPG. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: TemplateName.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. George Harrison image

[edit]

Can you please tell me exactly why you prefer that ugly George Harrison image over the better one? Perhaps the better one is copyrighted (like is said in the image itself), but it is fair use and it is low-resolution for non-profit purposes. There are tons of copyrighted fair-use images on Wikipedia, just like the George Harrison image I propose that we use.

Not meaning to be rude, but if my proposed image is still just not acceptable, any chance we could dig up some better image of George Harrison, that we can actually use? --Weierstraß (talk) 20:36, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Littlesteven.JPG

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Littlesteven.JPG. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add Replaceable fair use disputed, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks for uploading Image:Mccartneytime.JPG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. Image:SimonC.JPG

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:SimonC.JPG. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add Replaceable fair use disputed, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 48 hours after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. License tagging for Image:BidenMTP.JPG

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:BidenMTP.JPG. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

I wasn't the one who added it (and I don't think it's a great picture either) but you might say something on talk for whoever did post it. Just wondered what the problem with it is - some of the photo rules are kind of obscure to me! Tvoz |talk 03:42, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you uploaded this image with an attribution-only template. Please be careful of the image copyright tag you use, as this does not seem to be correct. The Edwards campaign website is licensed under the fairly restrictive Creative Commons BY-NC-ND 2.0 license, which states that noncommercial use is restricted, as well as derivative works. Hi, Bbsrock, I was curious where on Barack Obama's campaign website it indicates that Image:Obamaharvard.JPG is freely licensed. --Iamunknown 00:24, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also (sorry for bombarding you, I have Barack Obama on my watchlist), the source for Image:ObamaSpeech.jpg indicates that it is an A.P., not a Senate, photograph. I don't that is free. --Iamunknown 00:27, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not post copyrighted material to Wikipedia without permission from the copyright holder, as you did to Image:Obamaharvard.JPG. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites (http://www.barackobama.com/photos/ in this case) or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously, and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
If you believe that the article is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) then you should do one of the following:

 • If you have permission from the author leave a message explaining the details on the article Talk page and send an email with the message to "permissions-en (at) wikimedia (dot) org". See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for instructions.
 • If a note on the original website states that re-use is permitted under the GFDL or released into the public domain leave a note at Talk:Image:Obamaharvard.JPG with a link to where we can find that note;
 • If you own the copyright to the material: send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en(at)wikimedia(dot)org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the GFDL, and note that you have done so on the article Talk page. Alternatively, you may create a note on your web page releasing the work under the GFDL and then leave a note at Talk:Image:Obamaharvard.JPG with a link to the details.

Otherwise, you are encouraged to rewrite this article in your own words to avoid any copyright infringement. After you do so, you should place a hangon tag on the article page and leave a note at Talk:Image:Obamaharvard.JPG saying you have done so. An administrator will review the new content before taking action.

Free images

[edit]

Regarding your email about freely licensed images ...

For anyone who is/was in the US congress, there is an official portrait that, as a work of the US federal government, is public domain. The official photo of John Edwards is already up there. You can also look at his old senate webpage using http://web.archive.org - most members of congress have photo galleries on their webpages and they are all public domain.

One cheesy trick is to use google image search with site:.gov. So, for example, if I wanted to try and find former Virginia governor Jim Gilmore, I could go to [2]. (Keep in mind that you will get some false positives this way - you need to make sure that a prospective image is really from the US federal government and not a state government website.)

As far as contacting the campaign directly, if they don't reply, there isn't but so much to do other than to try contacting a different person. (For example, you may have just used a generic "contact us" link, but you might want to look around for an email address/phone number for a media liason or something.) Also, it's important to make sure that your email clearly identifies who we are and what our licensing requirements are and that it is not just "can you send me a photo". Using language like "to help us improve coverage of your candidate" is a good idea because whoever you are contacting will share that goal. Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission has some decent sample letters of permission if you haven't already seen them.

Does that kinda answer your question? There's no magic potion or anything ... just be polite and ask nicely and often, they will help. --BigDT 18:45, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Benoitring.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. — Moe ε 15:45, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Note also that the Flickr account from which this was taken lists this image as fully copyrighted, and I see no evidence other than your statement that the creator of this work has released this image into the public domain. Rklawton 15:56, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Yes, you can use it for your article, just kindly give me credit for taking the picture." is NOT equal to the "PD-self" tag you placed on the image. First, you are not the creator of the work. Second, the creator only give permission for use in this article. Third, the creator required photo credit - a requirement not expressed in the "PD-self" copyright tag. This link should provide you with all the information you need to sort this out Wikipedia:Example requests for permission - and thanks for efforts! Rklawton 19:57, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is a problem I have with the photo. For it to be used, the author must relicense that photo with a GNU or Creative Commons license (it must be noted that Flickr does the CC licensing). Permission is not enough to be free according to Wikipedia:Example requests for permission#What not to ask permission for. Sorry about that. -- Oakster  Talk  21:39, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Two non-free images you have uploaded are up for speedy deletion. Image:GovHowardDean.jpg has been replaced by a free alternative, and Image:Ronpaulspeaking.jpg lacks fair use rationale (no evidence this is a PD image). Thanks. --Tom (talk - email) 14:42, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

since you have a focus on images, I feel I should tell you to upload your images to Commons if they are under a free license... It'll save on the backlog, and provide smaller sister projects with images. Please remember to always upload free work to Commons.

--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 21:11, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, GFDL images are welcome, as well as all Creative Commons images that are not non-commercial or no-derivates (so is welcome, ) is not. If it's your own work, GFDL has the disadvantage that the license has been written for software and text and not for images. That is why more images are licensed through Creative Commons than via GFDL.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 22:39, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (Image:JohnEdwards1.JPG)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:JohnEdwards1.JPG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 20:53, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:NewsweekObama.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:NewsweekObama.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Image source problem with Image:Jackfigurelost.jpg

[edit]
Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Jackfigurelost.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 00:53, 8 October 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. KipSmithers T/C 00:53, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use Image:Richardsonportrait.jpg

[edit]
Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Richardsonportrait.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add , without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.

Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Tom (talk - email) 23:16, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by an adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr 07:40, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ron Paul has been nominated for a featured article review. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets the featured quality. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article's featured status. Editing survey

[edit]

Hi Bbsrock. My name is Mike Lyons and I am a doctoral student at Indiana University. I am conducting research on the writing and editing of high traffic “current events” articles on Wikipedia. I have noticed in the talk page archives at Barack Obama that you have contributed to the editing or maintenance of the article. I was hoping you would agree to fill out a brief survey about your experience. This study aims to help expand our thinking about collaborative knowledge production. Believe me I share your likely disdain for surveys but your participation would be immensely helpful in making the study a success. A link to the survey is included below.

Fair use rationale for File:Catchapredator.JPG

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Catchapredator.JPG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice?pd_THOR | =/\= | 04:19, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image File:Sopranos6.jpg

[edit]
⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Sopranos6.jpg.

You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Notification of automated file description generation

[edit]

Your upload of File:Bobweirratdog.jpg or contribution to its description is noted, and thanks (even if belatedly) for your contribution. In order to help make better use of the media, an attempt has been made by an automated process to identify and add certain information to the media's description page.

This notification is placed on your talk page because a bot has identified you either as the uploader of the file, or as a contributor to its metadata. It would be appreciated if you could carefully review the information the bot added. To opt out of these notifications, please follow the instructions here. Thanks! Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
