Notability
[edit]If you have never heard of Val Doonican you obviously didn't live in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s! He was a fixture on Saturday night TV for 25 years! I will expand the article once I have gathered and prepared my material. Dabbler 17:14, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- He was often on TV in New Zealand as well. rossnixon 00:55, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
Correction - his TV ran for 25 years, but not on Saturday. It moved to Saturday eventually but not for a full 25 years!
Is the date of birth correct?
- Yes, according to his official website, linked to in article. rossnixon 01:15, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
NO it isn't! The singer was born in 1928. Source: Guinness British Hit Singles 14th edition and confirmed by the registry office births indexes for Ireland - which also say he was born "Michael Doonican". The website - "official" or not is wrong - sorry. John2o2o2o (talk) 01:46, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
Changed it from 1927 to 1928. (rossnixon, sorry for not logging in) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.234.242.74 (talk) 11:20, 18 May 2013 (UTC)
I note that the year of birth has been changed back to 1927 again. Does this mean that the information quoted above, which seemed fairly definitive, is inaccurate after all? Gwladys24 (talk) 15:53, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
Walk Tall
[edit]The Walk Tall linked here is the song by John Mellencamp, not the Val Doonican one. I've removed the link. 47.251.0.13 14:53, 15 August 2006 (UTC) Rojomoke 14:53, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
- He is also fond of using the 'Spell check' function on his computer as he said in an interview found on his website.
That has to be the most trivial information I've ever read on WP. 213.84.156.15 17:48, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
Sandy Denny and Led Zeppelin - hoax?
[edit]I've removed this sentence: "A long-standing friend of the singer Sandy Denny, in 1970 Doonican was present at the recording of the Led Zeppelin track "The Battle of Evermore", contributing to the song's Gaelic-influenced backing harmonies." The source was given as "Interview, Raidió Teilifís Éireann, October 14th, 1971". That source is, obviously, inaccessible, and as far as I can see no other sources repeat the claim. I know that Denny and Led Zeppelin were mates, but Doonican's involvement sounds to me very much like a hoax. The claim was added yesterday, after his death was announced. If anyone can demonstrate that it is not a hoax, of course it can be reinstated. Ghmyrtle (talk) 15:29, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
- Curiously, this source claims that Jimmy Page played on Doonican's 1964 hit "Walk Tall". I'm not sure that's any more believable.Martinevans123 (talk) 15:49, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
- That's actually very believable - he played on loads of crap. Ghmyrtle (talk) 15:54, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
- In that case I guess it might lend support! Martinevans123 (talk) 16:05, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
