Talk:Veneti (disambiguation)
To further disambiguate, here is a quote from Alexander M. Schenker, The Dawn of Slavic (1995, Yale University Language Series):
- "From various ancient sources we know of three different tribes bearing the name of the Veneti or Venedi. A large tribe of the Veneti, first mentioned by Herodotus, lived along the northern shores of the Adriatic sea (see Adriatic Veneti). A few surviving place names and brief inscriptions suggest that the Adriatic Veneti spoke an Italic dialect. The memory of the Italic Veneti survives in the names of the province Venetia and the city of Venice. There was also a Celtic tribe called the Veneti living in the Morbihan district of Brittany.... Finally, another tribe named the Veneti was mentioned by Pliny the Elder who located them along the Vistula."
---By the way, Schenker totally rejects the theory that the Venedi of the Vistula region were a Slavic people, as some claim, and his arguments against are rather convincing; but I suppose there is still the possibility that the Vistula Veneti may have been Slavic. On another note: it is needless to say that only a demented person would still suggest that the Adriatic Veneti were Slavic, since we already have inscriptions that prove conclusively that they were not. The Enetoi of Paphlagonia: there is very little info on them: see the Iliad, Book II, near the end; and some other scattered references here & there in various sources. According to my reference, the Paphlagonian Enetoi ethnonym indicates Henetoi, not *Wenetoi or *Venetoi, so they will not be listed in the Veneti (disambiguation) page; if they are, it will not be presented with an initial v or w.
