The opposite of random access.
No, there are two alternatives when things are opposite.
a reel-to-reel tape must be wound to the right position
If the data must be accessed then the tape must always be wound to the right position, the point is how do you GET to the right position. I know what was meant but that was not what was written.
whereas a pickup needle can be immediately put down on any point of a long-playing vinyl record.
Poor example. You can access any part of the record on any one radius but then the record must be accessed sequentially to get to the right part.
