Talk:OpenSUSE/Archive - SUSE Linux
suse
[edit]what does "SuSe" stand for?
- Done. -- Tim Starling 12:55 19 Jun 2003 (UTC)
From a 1998 FAQ (pre-Novell purchase):
- What does S.u.S.E. stand for?
- "Gesellschaft f=FCr Software- und Systementwicklung mbH", which
- can be roughly translated as "Company for Software- and System-
- Development"
- How do you pronounce S.u.S.E.?
- It should be pronounced like "Soose". The "U" sounds like the
- "oo" in "moose", the last "e" is spoken like the "a" in "at".
- But in general it is not very important to pronounce it
- correctly, as long as it is clear what you are talking about.
- What is that animal in the logo?
- Despite the fact, that some people call it a turtle or a toad,
- it actually is a chameleon. :-)
- Does it have a name?
- Well, not an official one. Some of us call it "Suse", which also
- happens to be a german female name. Others just call it "the
- toad".

"Unlike many other Linux distributions, it is not possible to produce and sell cheaper versions of the SuSE CDs, due to license restrictions on the installation tools. They may be copied at no charge, however."
I'm very interested in this issue: What does the SuSE license specifically allow? If a friend buyed/downloaded legally SuSE8.2, is it also legal for me to burn copies from it, aslong as I do not sell them?
4lex 10:00 11 Jul 2003 (UTC)
- The license is here: http://www.suse.com/us/private/support/licenses/yast.html Kosebamse 10:41 11 Jul 2003 (UTC)
Generally speaking, the contents of downloadable distributions of SuSE (9.x) are covered by the GNU-GPL [ GNU's Not Unix-General Public License - http://www.gnu.org/licenses/licenses.html ]. If you purchase the media from Novell, or perform YaST/YaST2 downloads, you probably have additional license considerations. Some video drivers and fonts, for example, are not covered by the GNU-GPL and have their own license agreements which come into play. Therefore, as long as you abide by the GNU-GPL for the contents of any media you give away, you're okay. Distribution of non-GPL software is something best left to people with legal representation on their staff.
In terms of copying your friend's "purchased" media, technically speaking, your friend can't distribute non-GNU-GPL code. You'd have to look at the license(s) that came with the retail package to know for sure if the media can be copied/distributed.
drgarrett 13:24 15 Jul 2005 (AST -9 UST)
-> can someone comment on what code is on the media in the retail package? thanks - drg
Typically pronounced "suzi"? Only by the ignorant. Perhaps "typically" ought to be changed to something like "commonly, but incorrectly,".
Is SUSE Linux part of POSIX(R)? Does it fall under category of SUS (single Unix specification)? Can it be specified as UNIX(R) system?
9.3 screenshots
[edit]Anyone have a good screenshot of their 9.3 desktop?
- If you're still looking for one, leave a msg on my talk page, I can make you a screencap. spazure (contribs) (review) 09:14, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
Geeko
[edit]As i recall there was a competition not too long ago to name to SuSE chameleon. It ended up acquiring the moniker of 'Geeko'. Does anyone have details of the competition (dates, winners, etc)? All i can find is the Slashdot blurb which doesn't contain much.
I found this: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2000-Mar/0055.html --70.146.101.15 23:51, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
Why Geeko ? And how do you pronouce SUSE ?
[edit]Well, there was a competition to name the 'beast' at beginning of 2000.
I was just about to join S.u.S.E. ( as it still was ) and folklore, and my future boss, has it that I picked Geeko as the name.
It was all a bit too smart really :-
A Gecko is a lizard
A Geek is, well, aren't we all in some way.
And a major driving force in S.u.S.E. was a certain J Geck.
And Herr Geck has never forgiven the competition winner since ....
As to pronouncing SUSE - even the natives in Nurnberg could never really agree, though I am bound by honour not to let the cat out of the bag as to what it was called internally.
I told lots of people around the world that it was pronounced Sousa : as in John Phillip. It lead to amusing references to some of his works. And it had the added benefit that the Americans got straight away !!
- Hmmm... Gecko is a lizard, and so is the cameleon... however, I'd say a gecko is a gecko and a chameleon is a chameleon. And as far I can tell, the mascott is a chameleon, so it could not be a gecko :) --Arny 19:13, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
---
It is my understanding that an 's' in German is pronounced like an English 'z'. So shouldn't the pronunciation be /zuzə/?
- No, that's not quite right; and, secondly, no -- the article has the pronunciation right. In fact, it ("Suse") is something you hear quite often in Germany, as it's a common female name. (That being said, accents do, in general, vary dramatically from one region to the next. - Michael (talk|contrib)
screenshot
[edit]Now that 10.0 has been released, should we update the screenshot. I don't think it's right to put an outdated screenshot of a distro, even if there are no major visible differences. What do you guys thinK?
Official name?
[edit]I was under the impression the name was SUSE Linux, however someone has edited the article to use SuSE Linux.
Name
[edit]Because in the original company title the 'u' stood for 'und' or 'and'(en ingles) it was not capitalised. However with the advent of Novell the origional SuSE company name is nearly forgotten. However in honor of the original company's effort I write it "SuSE"
And yes we need a new screenshot.

Distribution Inaccuracies
[edit]I'm pretty sure info here is inaccurate now that 10.0 is out. The day suse/opensuse 10.0 was released, the OSS and the pro/regular versions containing freeware were instantly available over the web as ISOs. I'm pretty sure too that the boxed copy was available for sale after this happened.
Shouldn't we use a Gnome screenshot
[edit]With 10.1, Novell used screenshots of Gnome on their website for Suse and during installation, Gnome is listed higher than KDE as a desktop environment choice. It seems then that we ought to have a screenshot of Suse with the Gnome desktop environment rather than KDE. 69.227.174.121 01:22, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, it does seem that Novell is leaning more on Gnome now. However, since both are devolped for the distro, more so than some distros, I frankly don't see why it matters. Maybe the primary one should be Gnome, but then include a KDE one later. I do not have a current SuSE installed, so I cannot take a screenshot. ~Linuxerist E/L/T 17:27, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
- Ok. I'll take one if and when I finish with my installation. The message before yours is mine, by the way. Theshibboleth 00:34, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
- I'd like to point out that KDE is used and supported very much in SUSE and is a very popular gui. It is recommended by Linus Torvalds and is largely developed in Europe (were SUSE has most of its users)Tjb891 03:44, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- Also according to the report on free and open source software KDE is used around twice as often as GNOME (10.2% to 5.5%), what means that KDE is listed higher. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 212.202.201.252 (talk) 16:13, 13 January 2007 (UTC).
And after all ther eis no SuSE user who uses Gnome, doubt it? Just ask who uses Gnome in the IRC and let it go.
Slow Destop Issue
[edit]Should the fact that Suse 10.0 while running either Gnome or KDE is seams to be slower than windows even though it is faster from the console be mentioned. If I recall correctly this issue was also a top prioity for Suse 11 to fix.Tjb891 15:02, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
- Where has this been mentioned? I use SuSE myself and have never encountered any slowdowns(if they exist, every other distro must suffer from them, since I notice no speed difference between my Debian and SuSE installs) Furthermore, I didn't even think openSUSE 11 has been mentioned on any roadmaps yet. Achilles2.0 08:07, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
- It was slow here after installing SUSE 10.3 (KDE), but that was because it didn't come with hardware accelerated drivers. After simply installing the latest drivers from NVIDIA, I have absolutely no problems on even an as "new" graphics card as a Geforce 8800GTS 640 MB, including Compiz Fusion. Based on this, I'm lead to believe this is a driver problem, not a distro problem. — Northgrove 15:05, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
Merge tag removal
[edit]As the discussion on openSUSE page concluded with keeping the articles seperate, I am removing the "merge" tag.--Emre D. 17:07, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
More Information Needed
[edit]The article needs to be expanded. It should mention that new hardware accelerated desktop environment, and also it should mention problems with mp3 playback and package management. -- CannibalSmith 16:38, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
OSX and SUSE????
[edit]I was told that many programs written for Mac OSX can run natively under Suse Linux. Is this true? Which programs? This could be important information for people thinking about making a swich from Mac OSX or Windows to Suse Linux. They might like to know more programs are available for them if they switch. Thank you.
SLES 9 and SLED
[edit]What is the difference between SLES and SLED?
SLES is the Server edition. SLED is the desktop edition. Both are aimed at the corporate market. --Taylor 00:09, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Pronunciation of 'SUSE'
[edit]I have changed [susʌ] to [susə] as the word-final unstressed open-mid back unrounded vowel [ʌ] is unlikely in American English; it's most likely heard in Scottish English, finally in words such as 'minah'. Schwa [ə] is far more common otherwise. In British English the first vowel is likely to be longer, so [su:sə] would be more appropriate. As for German, I suspect it's something like [zu:sə]? I have also changed the brackets from slashes to squares as we are indicating pronunciation, not the distinctive phonemes of the word. See Manual of Style: Pronunciation. Jsteph 15:09, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for that. I put the /ʌ/ only because the examples given in an IPA article somewhere here seemed to match well enough. The schwa is better. --Ds13 23:28, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
- Actually it's pronunced [zu:zə] in German, I've never heard something like [zu:sə], that would be SUZE (oder Suße). --89.53.31.253 18:09, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
Stubbing
[edit]I could have sworn in my last Talk Heading that I mentioned a method of solving the versions problem, by making stubs out of the old pages, and editing the new one for current version. Also SuSE 10.1 should not be merged with OpenSuSE 10.1, because they are DIFFERENT. Not significantly no, however they are. Perhaps all the Novell products should be organised under the Novell article, as stubs or... something. They could be sub-categorised Linux, Security, Network admin... etc.
James Matthew 00:23, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
Merger with openSUSE, SLED and SLES under new name
[edit]i think that the four articles hsould be merged under one name such as 'SUSE Linux Distributions' or something like that. This would also make the other articles more in depth as they will be able to rely off features found in each other as supporting evidence. --H a m m o 21:53, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- I disagree. They are all different products sponsored by Novell. You wouldn't put Ubuntu and Kubuntu next to each other just because they're sponsored by Canonical, would you? Peteturtle 10:26, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
NEW ARTICLE
[edit]I have created the article entitled SUSE Linux Distibutions in order to provide an up to date resource for SUSE linux. I am a firm advocator for SUSE and hope that the general wikipedian public agrees on this article becoming the proper article for SUSE Linux. As of now I am on SUSE IRC channels trying to get professionals to clean up this article. To vote on whether this should be main page leave a yes or no comment under this comment --H a m m o 09:47, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
SUSE Features section
[edit]I have cleaned up a very ropey paragraph at the end of the section on the features of SUSE but it requires some more work from someone who know more of the topic that I. Especially the part stating that all open-source MP3 software is illegal. Alamaison 19:56, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
Version 5.3
[edit]It seems that there was a release of a version 5.3 in July 1998, but it's not visible in the historic.
No information about Microsoft deal?
[edit]Is there a reasons that this article contains no information about Novell's deal with Microsoft and its consequence for SUSE and openSUSE? //Alukasz 08:59, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
Vandalized Page?
[edit]I am concerned that the SUSE page has been vandalized. If you search "Microsoft Linux" into the search bar it loads up the SUSE page. Is this vandalism or is there a reason for this? It looks like someone who is pissed off with the Novel-Microsoft Deal did vandalism.
Article says:
There is a rumour that the name is a tribute to the German computer pioneer Konrad Zuse.
I remember that some time ago the article clearly and correctly stated that the pronounciation in German of Suse is distinct from Zuse (though in English this might differ) and not a tribute to not even reminiscent of Zuse in German. Therefore the article should not say there is a rumor it should debunk it. --Ben T/C 08:32, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- To be honest, I'd prefer the reference to the rumor should be removed altogether -- but I won't do so unless others agree to it. spazure (contribs) (review) 09:09, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Suselinux10.3 renegadeviking.jpg
[edit]Image:Suselinux10.3 renegadeviking.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Deletion/merge
[edit]I think this article should be merged with SUSE Linux distributions and subsequently deleted.
There are already articles for:
- SUSE Linux distributions Provides a general overview of the SuSE Linux family of products/
- SUSE Linux Enterprise Server The commercial server version of SuSE Linux.
- SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop The commercial desktop version of SuSE Linux
- openSUSE The community distribution from which SLES & SLED is derived.
I just don't see under where SUSE Linux falls under. It is redundant, confusing and un-needed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.238.172.212 (talk) 21:52, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
I also propose, and volunteer to, expand the SuSE Linux Distributions article as some details are missiong. E.g. SuSE Linux Retail Solution SLRS runs on many many retail/POS systems at many large retailers, etc. I think that's worthy of a mention.
I see already there was an attempt to merge, but with openSuSE article, which makes no sense. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.238.172.212 (talk) 21:49, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
